The Montezuma Tennis Association (MTA) was started in October of 1978 by Hank Lantelme and adopted the official name by Bob Rhine. There have been many changes to Francis Field since 1978. Three of the six original courts have been replaced with the pay-to-park public garage. A great playground for children is adjacent to the remaining three tennis courts. St. Johns County has done a good job in maintaining the court surfaces, the nets, and lighting for night play.
Hank Lantelme continues to lead the activities at "City Courts". Play starts at 8:30 am and generally ends around noon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Regardless of your skill level or gender or age, all players are welcome to come out and join the fun.

It was a perfect day for a perfect Happy Hour on the Hudson. Tennis players from St. Augustine were present. Some of the celebrities were Hank Lantelme and "Big Al" Smith. As advertised, the view from the balcony of David's and Roz's second home was spectacular. David has put in a lot of effort in renovating the property and the results are great. Everyone had a wonderful time, cheers to David and Roz.

The Montezuma Tennis Association has been in existence for 33 years under the helm of Hank Lantelme. The association is unique in that it has always been organized, but disorganized at the same time to allow for socialization, which is an integral and important part of the experience. Recently, there has been a breakdown in some of the basic old traditions that have kept the experience pleasant and courteous to everyone. A primary example is the delay and confusion on the bench as to who is next to play and who is playing/not playing. This often leaves three players waiting an unreasonable time for the next player, often in unbearable heat, for the next player. A simple return to the old traditions would greatly improve the flow of play and be more courteous to the group as a whole. Click on the ball to read an attempt to revisit and document the traditions that have made the MTA so successful.
